We stayed strong and held our heads high as the inspectors came through this past Friday for the final walk through of our facility. We are all absolutely thrilled that we can now offer USDA inspected slaughtering and processing. One of the advantages of USDA inspection is that local producers will now have a better opportunity to bring their products to the local markets. Without the USDA seal producers cannot sell their products to the public market unless the animal was sold to the consumer prior to the animal being slaughtered (which would then make it Custom). Long story short happy farmers make for happy communities and stronger economies. Everybody wins. For now we are only approved to slaughter under USDA inspection on Tuesdays. So if you need to schedule an animal keep that in mind. We can still do Custom work the rest of the week.
We are also pleased to say that we began the process of becoming certified organic slaughterhouse. This is another need that we strongly feel is not being met in our community. In order for meat to be sold as organic the farm, the animal, and the processing facility all must be certified as such. We will be working with Pennsylvania Certified Organic which is conveniently located just around the corner from us. Today we met with Heather Donald who helped start us on the path toward certification which we are hoping to be up and running by mid September.
In other news if you are looking for something to do this weeked you should go out to FARMFEST. This event is lasts all weekend and is a celebration of the local organic community. They will be offering live music, workshops, stuff for the kids, and a smattering of other fun treats. Go check it out. You might also run into Helen who will be walking around and talking to folks about RSMC.
As always we love to hear from ya’ll. The good-- the bad-- and the slightly off kilter. We love your feedback.
